How River Buddies Started

Idaho River Buddies: How a Morning Idea Sparked a Movement

Early mornings at the Trouthunter fly shop in Island Park, Idaho, are about more than just coffee and rigging rods—they're where ideas are born. In 2011, one such idea changed lives.

Martin Reed, a new pharmacy grad, brought in a humorous gift: a prescription-style card filled with flies. The shop crew loved it. “Why not sell these?” someone asked. “And better yet—use the money for something meaningful.”

The plan: make 100 cards, sell them for $60, and use the proceeds to take underserved youth on a guided fly fishing trip on the Henry’s Fork. With donated gear and support from the fly fishing community, that first trip became reality. Twelve kids floated the river, fished, explored, laughed, and left not just with gear—but with memories and mentors.

Since then, Idaho River Buddies has grown into a small 501(c)(3) nonprofit, hosting annual trips for youth with the help of generous donors, dedicated guides, and outdoor brands like Echo, Fishermen’s Eyewear, and multiple outfitters in the area.

In 2025, River Buddies celebrates its 15th year. What began over coffee and morning guide talk has become a model of mentorship, healing, and hope. A rod, a river, and someone who cares—that’s all it takes.
